Making Tax Digital for landlords and self-employed people

Starting April 2026, new rules are coming for landlords and self-employed individuals. Here’s the detail:

If your rental or self-employed income (before expenses) exceeds £50,000 in the 2024/25 tax year, you'll need to comply with Making Tax Digital (MTD) from April 2026. For those with incomes over £30,000 in the 2025/26 tax year, the requirement kicks in from April 2027.

What does this mean for you? You'll need to maintain digital records using compatible software and submit income tax updates to HMRC every quarter. Then, you'll file an annual tax return and settle any tax owed by 31 January of the following year.

For those starting out as a landlord or becoming self-employed after April 2026, MTD sign-up isn't mandatory until after you submit your first self-assessment tax return. However, you can opt in voluntarily if you wish.
